If you have problems sleeping you could try some of the methods below. Just pick one that feels appropriate for that night and focus on that one method, or you can combine two or three together. Print off this page and keep it handy at your bedside.
To start with it is best to relax one part of the body at a time. Starting with your feet, then legs, stomach, back, arms, neck, head, facial muscles and your mind. Let your whole body go loose and limp.

Letting go. Simply let go completely.
Relax every part of your body so there is no tension anywhere. Repeat the word "Relax" again and again to slow your thoughts and relax your mind. Just let go of all your worries and stresses. Try letting go of any thoughts and just let them drift past, and keep focusing on the letting go.
Go over tomorrow's events.
Run through the next day's events in your mind before you go to sleep. See yourself successfully doing all the things you need to do, and get excited. See the positive results and look forward to the new day with expectancy. Once you are happy with the outcomes, you can let them go and sleep will be easier. You'll wake up feeling much better and prepared, and you will be more relaxed and positive.
Counting the breaths.
The simple exercise of counting every out breath from 1 to 10 is a very good way to slow down the mind and stops you thinking about any problems or worries you may be holding on to. Actually focus on the breath as it enters and leaves your nostrils.
Smiling, thinking happy thoughts.
Just do it. Fake it if you have to but smile really big and think the happiest thoughts that you can. Try to muster up all the happy memories from the past. Think also of the good, happy things that are in your life right now. See too, yourself having fun and enjoying future events. Make life a celebration.
Taking the pain.
Imagine taking the pain that is your life. Maybe (and I hope you are) a positive person. It does not matter what type of person you are you can actually wake up feeling great on this one. All the worries of the past, present and future, take on board. Imagine yourself really strong and that you are taking on board all your pain. You can repeat to yourself "take the pain" or "I can handle it" over and over.
Rising above.
Maybe your mind is overactive or alternatively, fatigued. If you can, imagine yourself rising above life`s problems and trivialities, and even above any greater difficulties you may have to deal with. Make a strong decision that you are going to rise above it all. That you are bigger than anything life throws at you. Think that you are soaring like an eagle, or on a mountain top looking down at all life's challenges.
Ball of White light.
Imagine that surrounding you is a ball of pure, loving, warm, soothing white light, and that it is healing your body and mind. Right to the very core of your being. This ball can be a combination of white and yellow brilliant light, or one or the other depending on your preference, just go with it. Then multiply the brightness by 100. Really get into this and try and hold the image there as long as possible.
Focusing on a holy being or object.
Think of a great and wise person that comes to mind and focus on his/her qualities. Try to hold onto their image and ask for their blessing. There are so many great spiritual teachers from the past and present. Alternatively focus on a holy image such as a statue or icon. Be imaginative and follow your instinct.
Standing under a waterfall.
If you can imagine it, this is very profound. The pure, warm, clean water, refreshes you and washes away all negativity. Imagine that more and more negativities are being washed out through your body. From the top of your head to the bottom of your feet. Clearing away any blocks and hurdles to your success and happiness.
Tiny people inside your body healing and cleaning you.
Imagine if you will, that inside of your body are a group of tiny people inside of your body. And they are a part of you, all of them intelligent and knowing exactly what to do to heal and repair your body. If you have an illness you could focus on a particular area. But generally let the workers heal you completely and all the way throughout your body. Scrubbing your lungs, collecting all the garbage, washing all your arteries, fine tuning your brain. Making you a brand new person.
Let the Universe take over.
Simply surrender your very being and all of the worries and challenges that you have in your life. Maybe you had a bad day, things are not going to plan. Something in your life is giving you pressure. You need answers and a different approach. Just put it in the hands of the Almighty, or the Universe. Relax knowing that all your troubles will be taken care of.
Blast out negativities.
Imagine now that there is a light emenating from your heart center and that as you focus on it, it grows to surround your whole body. Perhaps your thinking is lethargic or alternatively over-active and you need to turn your thoughts around before you sleep. The light is totally positive and will blast any negativities clean out of sight. Repeat again and again until they are all gone and just the light remains.
Emptiness, seeing all things as empty.
Everything that you can imagine .... yourself, other beings, and all things in this world and the Universe perceive as empty. Things are not solid, and can be broken down to simply forms of energy, and even the energy is empty. Everything is made up of different parts that can be broken down. Therefore your thoughts are not solid, but simply rise up from within and then disapear. Imagine scattering every atom of your body and mind out into the Universe and try to remain in this state.
Surround yourself with a glass shield, negativity bounces off.
Great protection method, any time of the day or night. Create a glass shield around yourself, and include an underside as well, so that there is absolutely no doubt that any negativity can come through. It is useful also to imagine that the shield is filled with light, so as to keep yourself in the positive. Only the thoughts and sounds that are truly positive can penetrate the shield.
Forgive yourself and forgive others.
If you're feeling uptight or stressed, you can give yourself a break and focus on forgiving yourself for all your mistakes and negative actions. Also, forgive others the harm that they have done to you or others, in any way. Simply feel all the negativity being released, just let it all go.
Shut down and recharge your batteries.
Imagine you are going to give yourself an overhaul. Firstly slow down your thoughts command that you shut down for the night. Next affirm that you are going to recharge your batteries, and wake up totally renewed and revitalised.
Follow your heart, be your true self.
Drop the thoughts that people expect of you. The image that you portray to the world, and just be your true self. Search deeply, and seek what your heart desires and requires.
Gratitude.
Live in an attitude of gratitude, and especially at night time, go over the things you can be really grateful for during that day. Even if it's something small, focus on it and give thanks. What's going on in your life right now that you can be truly grateful for? Count your blessings, feel how very, very, lucky you are.
Listen.
Be still and turn your attention inwards. Listen carefully to what you are thinking. Slow down your thoughts and listen for any sounds that resonate from within. Keep focusing on any noises inside, maybe a humming, or a high pitched tone. Relax your body and mind and tune into your rhythms.
Ask your subconscious.
Do you have a niggling problem, or are you looking for an answer and a better solution. Then command your subconscious mind to come up with the right solutions and answers. The secret is to ask the right question, or questions over and over as you fall asleep. You could repeat "I'm going to find a solution" over and over.Your subconscious will work effortlessly to create great new ideas that you need. It may take several nights in a row to find answers to really pressing problems. (For example continue to search for a sleep solution). Remembering that different people require different solutions. Eventually you will receive the required remedy or result.
Do the right thing.
Think that tomorrow you will do the right thing in every possible way. I will be honest in my affairs and be true to myself. Keep this focus.
Peace.
Relax and slow down your thoughts. Begin to focus inwards. Breath deeply through your nose for a while. Next breathe normally and repeat the word "Peace" on every out breath, each time going deeper and deeper inside of yourself. Search for the core of your being, your very existence.
Defragment your mind.
If you want to wake up with new ideas and release your creativity, imagine your mind being sorted and your thoughts, memories, and feelings being put in the right order, so as to maximize your productivity. Much like files and programs on a computer.
