Sleep Cures and Self Development

Insomnia.
For many people sleep deprivation is a major concern and problem in their lives. There are mainly three types of insomnia, namely:

  • Initial insomnia, difficulty falling asleep, longer than 30 minutes.
  • Middle insomnia, after falling asleep one wakes up early and can't get back to sleep.
  • Late or Terminal insomnia, that is, premature awakening in the morning with less than 6 hours of sleep.

Everyone knows what it's like to have a sleepless or disturbed night's sleep, and when that becomes two, three, or more consecutive nights, people start to become depressed, irritable, and lose concentration. They feel drained and lack energy. Generally they find life hard to cope with.

If you have a problem with insomnia you may be taking sleeping pills, which will give you a quick solution. Long term this is not healthy and you may well have become addicted.

Over the counter, or herbal tablets are a better choice, but may still cause a little drowsiness in the morning.

Snoring.
Snoring is quite common at sometime in people's lives. This is when the airways in a person's nose or throat become narrowed during sleep. This could mean there is too much nasal and throat tissue, or simply that a person is overweight. Remedies include losing weight, avoiding alcohol, clearing your nasal pasages and improving your sleep posture. Some people even opt for surgery which is often done with local anesthesia and little pain.

Sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea can be very serious. It is when your breathing stops while you are asleep, just long enough to awaken you. Because insufficient air is drawn into the lungs you may wake up with a choking sound, feeling breathless. Treatment may require using a mask that gives continuous positive airway pressure.

Restless legs syndrome.
This is when a person cannot resist moving the legs. Your legs feel so uncomfortable you have to move them. This can make it difficult to relax and fall asleep. Getting up and walking around can be a remedy for this, or possibly medication.

Narcolepsy.
This is when a person has difficulty staying awake. People who suffer from this can suddenly fall asleep in the daytime. This can be very dangerous, when at any moment a person can fall asleep during any activity like driving a car or while working. Medication is the main remedy for treating narcolepsy.

Other Ideas to improve your sleep.
In the day try to do some form of exercise such as cycling, rowing, or simply walking for 20 to 30 minutes a day. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy foods, as much fruit, salad and steamed vegetables as possible.

If you wake up early, try and get back to sleep by listening to relaxing music or other solution. If that does not work, put light on, stay awake and do something constructive, radio, MP3s, read or watch a portable DVD player (positive content only). Alternatively get up and maybe have a warm drink to relax you.

Don't just drift with negative thoughts running around in your head. If you've managed to get a few hours sleep, be grateful and maintain a positive attitude. Worrying will not help one bit. Keep your goal of finding a solution in mind and every night you will be making progress.

Everyone is different and each person may need a different solution. Each having a nightly routine of their own, preparing for sleep.
